Orange Hawflakes Layered Cake




Alrighty peeps.. here we go again.. Monday followed by tuesday, wednesday, thursday and ohhhh how i wished today was friday already so that i can call my 'babysitter' to look after Sonia.. we didnt get to go on a movie date last friday but thats ok.. i enjoyed my princess cake project very much..




Talking abt princess cake.. Sonia now no longer wants a princess cake for her bday but instead she wants me to bake her a merry-go-round cake.. gulp! eversince our last Europe trip, my girl has developed the liking of merry go round.. u dont want to know how many times she was on it while we were in Europe.. oh boy.. u dont want to know lol.. thank goodness the one in Euro disney was paid for when we got the entrace ticket so at least her papa didnt hv to fork out 2 to 3 euros per ride!



So anyway this cake was baked last friday.. i didnt get the chance to even take pics till yesterday evening.. the only two pieces that u see here were the only pieces that were left lol.. i gave it out as soon as i sliced it and the rest were eaten by hb who is a hawflakes fan..




Ingredients
(A)
300g butter - i used unsalted Anchor
150g caster sugar
14 eggs yolks
5 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
1tsp vanilla essence

(B)
150g Caster sugar
7 egg whites
1/4 tsp cream of tartar

(C)
180g Hong Kong flour
1 tsp baking powder

(D)
1 tsp orange colouring
2 tsp orange paste

(D)
10 packets of dried tamarind hawflakes


Method
- Preheat oven at 180c for 15 minutes. Prepare a baking tray 8x8
- Ingredients A: Combine butter, castor sugar, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla essence in a mixing bowl. Beat on high speed for 10 minutes until creamy.
- Add in egg yolks one at a time while beating until well blended. Pour butter mixture into a large bowl, set aside.
- Ingredients B: In another bowl whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar until frothy. Add caster sugar a little at a time and continue to whisk for 5 minutes till medium/stiff peak
- Ingredients C: Add in sifted hk flour and baking powder into butter mixture.. fold in gently to combine.
- Pour the batter is egg white. Mix until evenly mixed. Divide into 2 parts. One part is mixed with ingredients D and one with original color.
- Weigh ur batter and divide it by the nbr of layers u want ur cake to be.. mine weigh abt 74g each layer. Bake layer by layer.. alternating between orange and plain batter using upper fire (add hawflakes on every orange layer .. 7mins each layer or until golden brown.. on each orange layer u use abt 15pcs of hawflakes)
- Bake last layer using upper and lower heat for 10mins.. if ur top gets brown too easily.. cover top with aluminium foil.



The taste of this cake is much better than my previous hawflakes layered cake that i baked.. hmm honestly i am not a big fan of hawflakes and will only bake if hb requests for it.. the best part is that i get to keep on trying new recipes each time he requests for one.. ty Cik Wan for sharing this recipe.. my food critic gave me a 3 thumbs up..

beautiful lapis as always :) the layers are so rata....i think i must praktis more lah...thot of making lapis cake for the CNY..u know my kids pelik sket, dia orang heart sekali itew haw flakes on its own, tapi when i baked kukus lapis haw flakes the other time, dia orang letak tepi the flakes, tak minat if dgn ckae plak, klakar seram arrr tu dudans, so im looking for lapis ckae yg tak terlalu byk telur to try again, tak kan nak buat prune lagik kan..

14 egg yolks??? argggh not enough eggs in my pantry arrr..if not musti subuh morning esok i buat jugak hahaha :D
wa wa wa sonia pandai arr mintak mama wat merry go round cake...tkpe mama dia pandai deco deco ni..kalau hasya yg mintak, harus i pi bawak dia naik merry go round berkali2 sampai dia muak..sebabnya sungguh tk reti nk wat itu merry go round...

p/s my dotter masih setia dgn barbie, now she request the one with mermaid tail uhuk uhuk..

Cantiknye the layers! I was just wondering though...in the B part of the recipe...you tulis egg white beans? Is that a typo or some ingredient i've never heard of before? Just thought i'd ask :)

Why dont u gv this recipe a try.. only uses 14eggs.. kira manageable lah part part nak pecah kan telur tu.. my other half memang fav hawflakes.. be it on its own or dalam cake.. semua dia bedal .. yelah dia kan china man hahaha (tu nickname dia among his aussie friends in Adelaide)

Merry Go Round we bought it in JB.. kat Tebrau City.. actually kan dia dah nak beli waktu kita kat paris but mak ai the price too pricey.. then we saw it kat JB.. terus kita beli.. not too x.. kira affordable ah..

Ape kata sebelum u start melapis u tarik nafas panjang panjang and put ur mind to it.. tell urself u hv to stand for at least 2hrs in the kitchen to do the lapis and tell urself u better do it right or else macam waste time aje.. ahhh tu dinamakan psyco diri sendiri hahaha

Even if I ternak ayam 40 ekor, and each one of them bertelur tiap hari, I would not want to bake that kek lapis. Even the ayam wont let me bake if for fear the cake would be disastrous.

Sampai hati ayam2 tu semua look down on me, kan? Niway, the cake looks so "ooooowhhh ....."

belom pernah makan hawflakes lapis...i suppose it tastes masam manis. Hv never attempted making any cake lapis but luking at yr endless beautiful lapis i'm so motivated to try one soon...hopefully can do it during the CNY hols.

Yr Marsha Princess Cake is lovely...Hats off to u coz u didnt attend any classes yet berani take order...am sure with more orders n hands on u'd get even better. U've def made de princess luk so seksi....her dado so mantop..Cantik n loike..LOL

Yep.. my hb kata i shud always challenge my abilities and that i shud put 101% in whatever i do baru boleh menjadi.. sama dgn princess cake.. am grateful i got the chance to at least try my hands on it.. seksi???? hahahha

My boys tak la young sgt cam ur princess Sonia. They r 11(turning 12 nxt mth), 10 & 8.. When diaorg ni in sch baru i dpt BW like now la.. Been a SAHM for almost 10yrs now..Yikes!! how time flies but I tell ya u its worth a megazillion times over. D boys r more closer to me so tat explains why they tau apa aje i buat like me joining the GA and they knew of d closing date n time. Ter over excited la diaorg ni.. Ahaks...

Anyways, ur lapis as always looks perfect but if u asked me to try bake akan kenyang la Cik Tong itew..

Good to hear that.. boys memang selalu rapat dgn mama.. girl dgn papa.. hairi is super closer to me.. ye lar i was a single parent since hes 12 tu lah hes closer to me.. si sonia pulak super close with papa.. sampai every morning bef papa goes to work.. she dah plan ape nak buat when papa's comes home fm work.. yesterday nak main play doh.. this morning dia plan with papa nak g swimming.. ni dinamakan budak sonia is a planner hahha
